A series of snow events that have plagued the region in recent days has left many city sidewalks unpassable because property owners or their tenants haven’t cleared the sidewalks of snow and ice.
“This has been an unusual few weeks with frequent storms and I know it’s a challenge to keep up with it,” said Mayor Daniel Hall. “But sidewalks clogged with snow and ice make it difficult, even dangerous, for pedestrians trying to get around. And for those with physical challenges, it makes it even harder.”
The City Code (Article XIV, Subsections 189-31 and 189-34) state that property owners and/or property occupants who fail to clear their sidewalks of snow and ice within 5 hours following a storm could be liable for fines of up to $250 and up to 15 days in jail. (A storm ceasing during the night shall be considered as ceasing at 7 a.m. the following morning.)
In an effort to encourage compliance with the sidewalk clearing ordinance, City Code Enforcement staff will be placing door hangers at properties that are in violation, asking the property owner or occupant to clear the sidewalk. If the sidewalk remains uncleared, the property owner will be cited and may be subject to fines.
“It’s really about assuring the safety of the public and ensuring that those who travel our city sidewalks can get where they need to go,” Mayor Hall said.
