The Queensbury-based Under the Woods Foundation announced that it is now providing grants to families of children with special needs such as those with autism and those in special education classrooms.
The main sponsor of the grants is North Country Subaru, which has funded Camp Under the Woods and the foundation for more than a decade.
“We are very grateful to North Country Subaru,” said Heidi Underwood, who started Camp Under the Woods and the Under the Woods Foundation.
Proceeds from the annual Churney Gurney Mountain Bike race also helps fund the foundation, Mrs. Underwood told Foothills Business Daily.
Camp Under the Woods was held for many years at the old Girl Scout Camp off Meadowbrook Road, but hasn’t been held for three years due to COVID and other factors, Mrs. Underwood said.
A press release said the foundation “will identify children/special education classrooms in the following counties: Warren, Washington, Saratoga and Essex. The Foundation will grant up to $2,000 per request. Grants are for children ages 3-21 years for a person with special needs.”
The foundation will review applications and provide grants twice a year. Application deadlines are March 1 and September 1. Special requests will be considered outside the application deadlines, Mrs. Underwood said.
Applications can be found at www.underthewoodsfoundation.org and can be submitted online or sent to the Under the Woods Foundation at 413 Bay Road, Queensbury, NY 12804.

Birch Bark Eatery, the vegan/vegetarian eatery at 21 Ridge Street in downtown Glens Falls, is closing.
Owner Tania Sharlow announced Wednesday on Birch Bark’s Facebook page that the restaurant will close at the close of business on Sunday, Jan. 15.
“I have been writing and rewriting this post for about three hours now because there is no soft, fun, breezy way to tell the world that we are closing Birch Bark,” Sharlow wrote on Facebook.
“It has been one of the hardest decisions of my life for me to make because I know the impact it will have on so many people. Birch Bark has always been about breaking stereotypes associated with vegan food, and of all the goals we set, I really think we accomplished this one quite well.
“I know that it would be polite to give you a solid reason I am making this decision…and I wish I could break it down to one thing that makes sense.
“Truthfully it is a lot of things that have led to this moment: rising costs, staffing struggles, product shortages, but mostly the need for me to do what is best for my family and my own mental health.
“All this being said, this is not the end of us making great food, just the end of Birch Bark. Please stay tuned to see what's next.
The restaurant asks that patrons with gift cards or donut cards use them before Jan. 15. Their popular donut calendar has shut down, though they will make the usual classics and favorites.
“I’m not ready for the sadness this is going to evoke in our community. Please know that we have truly loved sharing hospitality and memories with you, our guests and this community.”
Birch Bark Eatery originally opened on Route 9 in Queensbury in 2018, before moving to downtown Glens Falls in December 2019.
The restaurant is open Thursday-Sunday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
