A missed proposal affects the business model
A man who wants to marry a woman should have a Plan A and a Plan B, Lily and David Jewelry store owner David Blackmore said at their ribbon cutting Friday April, 22.
The ring is important, but the proposal itself is equally important.
“The where, and the thought that you put into it, is the story” that she will tell her friends, he said, “So you want to get it right.”
Not only does staff at Lily and David help people understand which diamond they are buying, David Blackmore trains his nine, year-round, and a handful of seasonal, employees, on the idea of the two-plan approach, he said.
That way a customer is not handing their sweetheart a diamond engagement ring like he did: Without fanfare, while driving home in the car, after a long day of work, after missing the family dinner at which he was supposed to propose, he said.
"Well, what do you think?" he recalled asking his then-girlfriend Richel. He added, tongue-in-cheek: “I’ve been hearing about it for 43 years."
Despite the proposal fiasco, David and Richel's marriage lasted, and for the past 10 years, the family has been running Lily and David Jewelers — named after two of the Blackmores’ grandchildren — from the Wilton Mall, a location he was never really happy with, he said. He likes that people can drive right to the front doorway.
The ribbon cutting celebrated the move to the shopping center across Route 50.
Allyssa Provost, their daughter, is working with her father and will take over the business fully in the next couple of years.
“I’m ready,” she said. She has been full-time with her father since 2004, but the move was a great way for her and her father to begin the transition in ownership.
Still, she said, “I’m glad he’ll be here for a few more years.”
CDL Insurance opens in Glens Falls
CDL Insurance celebrated the opening of their third office with a ribbon cutting April 22, on Broad Street in Glens Falls. The home office is in Northville, another in Gloversville. They have plans for a fourth office in Lake Luzerne. [Editor's Note: We have learned that the office is now open.]
They specialize in transportation insurance in 43 states, and started with a focus on trucking and transportation insurance.
Shelly Munger, the new office manager said they were always a “one-stop shop” for home, life and various forms of business insurance, but that has become the case more so now.
After decades of working focused in personal insurance lines, Munger said she made a switch to commercial and working with CDL. “This office is brand new, so we need to build up a clientele,” Munger said. “I also handle trucking now, so I can write tractor trailers, but I can write a business, and I can write a boat.”
The Adirondack Regional Chamber of Commerce hosted the event.
