Michael Barrett speaks about Philip Schuyler at the Fort William Henry Conference Center on April 22, 2023.
More than 100 people joined officials and historians from the Lake George Battlefield Park Alliance, Albany Rural Cemetery, and the French and Indian War Society at Lake George for a program about Philip Schuyler on Saturday April 22. The Fort William Henry Conference Center played host.
Historian Michael Barrett, a trustee of Albany Rural Cemetery, touched on Schuyler’s military service as a militia officer serving the British during the French and Indian War and as a General of the Continental Army and confidant to George Washington in the American Revolution.
The Village of Schuylerville where the British were forced to lay down arms and leave in what is thought of as the “turning point of the American Revolution,” is named for Schuyler.
In peacetime he was Albany Mayor, a member of the Continental Congress, New York State’s Surveyor General and as a US Senator.
He also held slaves who, in their work, helped him create a successful business.
Tax Program's 10th anniversary
Ballston Area Community Center Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program completes tenth year of operation.
From a press release: The Ballston Area Community Center (BACC) Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program concluded its annual tax preparation service for low-income families, seniors, and persons with disabilities on Tax Day Apr 18, 2023, the tenth anniversary of the group. This year, the BACC VITA completed over 160 free tax returns that produced more than $270,000 in refunds to our community.
By partnering with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the United Way of the Greater Capital Region, our extensively trained and certified tax preparers provide reliable and trustworthy tax filing services for free for individuals who earned less than $60,000 last year. Our clients saved more than $49,000 on tax preparation and electronic filing fees.
The VITA program is successful because of the commitment of volunteers at BACC who help clients navigate the complicated process of qualifying for all available credits and deductions to maximize their refund.
