Moreau: Petition for Zoning Change afoot
As the Moreau Planning Board considers a Saratoga BioChar proposal to build a processing facility in the town’s industrial park, an effort is afoot to change the zoning for the park’s remaining 16 vacant lots.
“It’s the only way we can protect the community from more of this happening,” said former town board member Gina LeClair, who is also leading an effort opposing Saratoga BioChar.
The industrial park, off Bluebird Road, is currently zoned M-1, which includes heavy industrial uses. LeClair is now collecting signatures on a petition to change the zoning to M-2, or light industrial.
“We don’t want Saratoga BioChar here, and we hope with enough signatures, we can convince the planning board to change the zoning. I think we need a lot of signatures to be convincing.”
LeClair has started the Facebook page “Not Moreau,” which includes more information on the efforts opposing Saratoga BioChar and changing the zoning.
The Moreau Planning Board was scheduled to discuss the Saratoga BioChar proposal at a June 20th meeting. –Gordon Woodworth

Best Friends, South High Grads, start nanny service
From a press release: Lovey + co, the Capital Region’s newest nannying service, is now booking for the summer after best friends Emma Goodspeed, 19, and Olivia Barber, 21, launched their business last week.
Emma and Olivia are both South High graduates and share a love for kids of all ages. Between them, they have more than 10 years of childcare experience, including babysitting, working in a daycare setting, and caring for Olivia’s two younger siblings.
Lovey + co are available for date nights, group events like weddings and adult birthday parties, overnight care or just for an afternoon!
“We are a one-stop shop for all of your childcare needs,” Emma and Olivia said.
Olivia’s two siblings, Kennedy and Luca, actually kickstarted their nannying careers.
“Since Kennedy was born in October of 2019, we have both nannied for her and have loved every minute of it,” Emma said. “You can imagine the excitement we felt when we found out that she’d be receiving a baby brother, Luca, in June of 2021.
Emma and Olivia’s nannying journey took a big step on Sunday, June 12, when the two posted on their personal Facebook pages, offering childcare for the summer as a pair. Their goal was to schedule a few weddings or group events, where families would need four hands to care for a large group of children.
MLK Saratoga’s “Social Justice Social Hour”
From an announcement: Join us for Social Justice Social Hour on Thursday, June 23 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Frederick Allen Elks Lodge at 69 Beekman Street in Saratoga. Weather permitting, we’ll be sitting out back. There will be a cash bar, and folks should feel free to BYO snacks.
As a way of supporting the Lodge, and in order to allow us to patronize its bar services, attendees will be asked to offer a $5 donation at the door to purchase a “temporary Associate Membership” for the night. You can also become actual Associate Members of the Lodge, which is a great way to support their efforts.
Come out for an evening of relaxation, community-building, and supporting one another, and feel free to share this invitation or circulate to others you think might be interested – or just bring them along on Thursday!
Canoe planters at Moreau Lake State Park
From a press release: The Friends of Moreau Lake State Park are launching a new initiative, the Canoe Planter Trail, Sunday, June 26, 2022, which is National Canoe Day.
Park Manager Al LaFountain found some old canoes and a row boat behind one of the sheds at the Park. The Friends of Moreau Lake State Park organized youth groups in the area (schools, Scouts, etc.) to each adopt a canoe, and each group has come up with interesting and relevant designs which they have implemented on their boat. These are now in the process of being placed around the Park and used as planters by Master Gardeners from the Friends Group using the sustainable method of Hugelkultur as the base, as well as other requirements needed to plant within a State Park (no fertilizers, no pesticides, no invasive plants, etc.).
The majority of the funding for the project was from the Stewart's Holiday Match program.
To illustrate the work undertaken, I attach an image of the first canoe placed at the entrance to the Park. It was adopted by a group of students from Saratoga Springs High School. The other groups that participated are:
- Cub Scouts Pack 4024, Wilton
- St. Mary's Alphonsus School
- Scouts Troop 24, Wilton
- United Sisters of New York, Albany
- South Glens Falls Youth Center
- Fort Edward High School, two groups, including one Special Education Class, the Life Skills Class.
