Two burned in Glens Falls explosion
An explosion at the Glens Falls Tech Meadows Park near East Field left two men seriously burned Wednesday, the Post-Star is reported Thursday. The two were taken by helicopter from the United Association of Plumbers & Pipefitters Local 773 facility to the burn center at Burlington Medical Center in Vermont. The men were home with their families for Thanksgiving Day, the story says.
Restraining order on shooting information
A judge from the state Supreme Court in Saratoga County issued a restraining order earlier this week that bars Saratoga Springs officials from publicly commenting or releasing more materials related to the shooting near the corner of Broadway and Caroline Street, a story in the Times Union reports. Three people were injured in a firefight that began at about 3 a.m. Sunday Nov. 20. The judge was reacting to the release of police bodycam video of the incident. Commissioner of Public Safety James Montagnino says the restraining order is likely unconstitutional.
Crypto "mining" halted
New York State has placed a two-year moratorium on "proof-of-work" cryptocurrency mining, the Times Union says. The “mining” requires an exorbitant amount of electricity to run the banks of computers that complete the mining and to cool the rooms where the computers are housed. This may run afoul of the state’s climate action plan, the story says.
Indoor pickleball
Two entrepreneurs are partnering to create a $1.5 million, seven-court pickleball facility in a former Kmart department store in Latham, the Albany Business Journal is reporting. The pair began hashing out the details for the True Pickleball Club over the summer and settled on a 20,000-square-foot portion of the vacant store after looking in the northeast. They are planning league and tournament matches with corporate sponsors and related revenue streams. About 4.8 million people play pickleball nationally, the story says.
Hocual approves $68M in REDC spending
Seventy-four projects across the state have been awarded Regional Economic Development Council Initiative funding, the Gov. Kathy Hochul’s office said on Wednesday. The Times Union has the story. This is the 12th round of funding. Kite’s Nest ReGeneration Capital Project won $1.6 million, the largest award in the Capital Region. The project will develop a parcel along the Hudson into a campus for education, youth employment, environmental justice and the arts, the story says.
