GlobalFoundries plans layoffs, freezes hiring
GlobalFoundries employs about 3,000 people at their Luther Forest Tech Park campus, and on Friday they announced that they will be laying some off, the Times Union is reporting. The chip maker has been planning a major investment in a second “fab” as the plants are called, but that is now in question, the story says. The company said in an earnings call that some customers are lowering their projected contracts with GF, as GlobalFoundries now calls itself. [Read our coverage here.]
Schenectady, Saratoga eyed for cannabis sales
A real estate firm has been investigating locations in Schenectady and Saratoga County as possible locations for cannabis dispensaries, the Daily Gazette is reporting. The locations under consideration are not being released. The state will issue the first licenses for recreational cannabis sale by the end of the year, and the Capital Region will receive seven licenses, the story says.
Trash haulers battle
County Waste and Recycling and Twin Bridges Waste and Recycling are still fighting in court, accusing each other of unlawful practices a story in the Albany Business Journal says. The dispute centers on pricing and whether County Waste is using predatory pricing to take over the trash hauling market, but also just how much Twin Bridges must say about their own pricing and customer list in order to prove this contention. County Waste is a subsidiary of the national company of Waste Connections Inc. Twin Bridges is a local company.
Can you handle one more Saranac Lake STR story?
Short-term-rental investment properties have grown over the last year in the Saranac Lake area, and they are owned by out-of-towners, the Adirondack Daily Enterprise is reporting. The data which the village collected and released is part of their discussion over STR regulations. About 80 active STR properties were listed in the village data, recently, the story says, but officials warned that the data is still sketchy.
