Bunker golf expands
Corporate retreats and other events are pushing the golf simulator market, and The Bunker will expand to a fourth location at Mohawk Harbor in Schenectady because of it, the Albany Business Journal says. They plan to open in June. A portion of their business model is to work with the nearby Rivers Casino. The Bunker ownership has a fifth location just south of Utica planned for later this month.
Owl Pen Books is officially historic
Owl Pen Books in Greenwich is now on the state’s Historic Business Preservation Registry, the Post-Star reports. Assembly member Carrie Woerner nominated the 62-year-old business earlier this year and presented the certificate Friday Oct. 28. Sydney Nichols and Eric Kufs had purchased the business in February and are the third owners. State politicians may nominate up to two businesses to the registry per legislative term, the story says.
Industrial Equipment and Supply pays $75K fine
Colonie-based Industrial Equipment and Supply Company, LLC will pay $75,000 to settle allegations that it sold counterfeit batteries to the Defense Logistics Agency, the Times Union is reporting. Mark Nystoriak and Sandra Nystoriak, principals in the firm, violated the False Claims Act for selling the counterfeit batteries, the story says. The original contract was valued at $33,928.60, the story says.
Castelli on working from the middle
The Post-Star is running an interview with Matt Castelli, the Democratic challenger to U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik, a Republican. He criticized Republicans and Democrats in a winding interview. He said Republicans are guilty of misleading voters over the 2020 presidential election results and turning the coronavirus pandemic into a political sideshow, among other activities. Democrats were too slow to act on inflation and on immigration reform, the story says.
People ask for variances to Lake Placid’s STR moratorium
A third person has asked for a variance to Lake Placid’s moratorium on short-term rentals — vacation homes that people rent generally for a week or less. The Town of North Elba placed moratorium on STRs in March while it hashes out regulations, but some people say they need the income an STR would provide, the Adirondack Daily Enterprise is reporting. The latest applicant bought their home a few months before the moratorium and were fined recently for renting without a permit. They are in dire financial need and are looking for options to get some income, the story says.
