Government, Law and Legal Services
The New York State legislature has had enough. Leadership in the body said they plan to pull back some of Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s executive powers that they first gave him a year ago at the start of the pandemic, the Albany Business Journal is reporting. They expect to pass the legislation later this week, the story says. Assemblymember Carrie Woerner’s tweet quoted in the story says the legislation will repeal the executive powers granted to the governor during the pandemic and will provide an orderly transition to the end of the state of emergency.
The Village of Lake George has a $350,000 budget gap, and they hope to fill part of it with an increase in parking fees for on-street parking, the Post-Star is reporting. The fees on-street would run $2 per hour, matching what is already in the parking lots of the village. The village mistakenly added a $350,000 revenue stream to its budget this year. The money will come from the Town of Lake George as payment toward the new sewer system, but it does not start until next year, the story says.
Road salt was to be studied in the Adirondacks, but the state scaled it back largely to avoid legal fights over drinking water, a story in the Adirondack Journal reported yesterday. The study stems from a law signed by the governor last year to look at salt used on roadways to combat ice and snow, but the runoff could be affecting well water which then becomes a liability for the state, the story says.
Commercial Real Estate
A developer has purchased a 30-acre parcel on the Hudson River in Hudson Falls, the ABJ is reporting. The former Valmet paper mill was purchased by developer Jerry Nudi who is looking for tenants. The 150,000 square foot factory and warehouse space is the fourth purchase Nudi has made in Warren and Washington counties in a year, the story says.
Architecture, Engineering and Development
The Roosevelt II Bathhouse in the Saratoga Spa State Park was named a public works project of the year by the New York Branch of the American Public Works Association, the Saratogian is reporting. The Bathhouse won under in the category Historical Restoration/Preservation (Less than $5 Million). It was funded by the New York Regional Economic Development Council (REDC) initiative and is part of a plan to make the building a center for arts and wellness, the story says.
