Sen. Dan Stec and others have cosponsored a bill that looks into broadband internet service in the north country and will require the state to post a map of coverage, the Post-Star is reporting. The Comprehensive Broadband Connectivity Act would require not only the map but hearings to address gaps in service. A similar bill passed both chambers last year, but was vetoed on the grounds that it was too expensive at $3 million, the story says.
Dick’s Sporting Goods is getting a technology boost with Albany-based CommerceHub, the Albany Business Journal is reporting. The tech firm is the link in the chain between the warehouse supply and the consumer who is trying to purchase the item. Although buyers find the item on Dick’s' website, it’s CommerceHub’s software that tracks inventory and makes sure the item is delivered to the buyer. The two companies have been working together since 2015. They have a contract to work together for many more years, the story says.
Government, Law and Legal Services
A woman fired from the Warren County government is suing the government in federal court for civil rights violations, the Post-Star is reporting this morning. The lawsuit stems from the firing over whether or not the employee used her position as a legal aid and asked others in the department to work with her, as she worked with her boyfriend, to purchase property in Warrensburg. The suit is asking for $1.5 million.
Art Devlin is the new mayor of Lake Placid running on the Republican and Teamwork party lines, the Adirondack Daily Enterprise is reporting. The son of Olympic ski jumper Art Devlin, the new mayor has been a trustee of the village for 12 years and ran on a platform to maintain infrastructure, support affordable housing, and keep taxes down, the story says.
Travel, Tourism and Recreation
The Adirondack Explorer has run a tribute to David Starbuck, the archeologist of north country fame. Calling him by the nickname “Indiana Starbuck,” the story highlights his activity unearthing the holy grails of the Adirondack region from the French and Indian War sites on Rogers Island in Fort Edward to Saratoga and in Lake George and elsewhere. Starbuck died in Glens Falls Hospital in December. He was 71.
