Opening the northern border
The Canadian border may open again, says a story in the Adirondack Daily Enterprise. Canada is looking at rules that require vaccinations and recent COVID tests, but the border is opening, the story says. U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik has partnered with Sen. Steve Daines, R-Mont., to introduce a bill that would start opening up the border on the U.S. side, the paper reports. The U.S. Department of Homeland Security plans to limit travel until at least July 21, but Stefanik and Daines are pushing to move faster and to allow family visits and visits to property owned in the United States, to do business and to travel to an American airport to board a flight, among other options, the story says.
Placid Bay Inn purchased
Real estate broker Keir Weimer bought Placid Bay Inn from Denise Dramm and the Dramm family trust for $1.57 million, according to the Albany Business Review. The motel with lakefront cottages overlooks Lake Placid's Paradox Bay, the story says. Weimer plans to upgrade the internet service and make other repairs before the Fourth of July holiday, the story says. He has plans to buy more property in Vermont and New Hampshire. His headquarters is in Saratoga Springs, the story says.
Books and LPs in Glens Falls
The Bookhouse and Sweet Side Records has opened in Glens Falls, the Post-Star is reporting. It offers used records and both used and new books The owners hope enough people in the area like the tactile nature of putting an album on the turntable or cracking the spine of a new book, the story says.
Brewing is a white man's game, no longer
Beer brewing is too much of a white man’s game, a story in the Times-Union says. The New York State Brewers Guild says they do not keep statistics, but an estimate of the state’s 484 craft breweries says under five are owned by women alone, three are Black-owned, and at least two are LBGTQ-run. Sloop Brewing Company in Hopewell Junction, owned by Marquita Reese, a Black woman, is starting an inclusion internship, the Open Waters Internship Program to bring in women, BIPOC (black, Indigenous and people of color) and the LGBTQ community, the story says.
Enterprise Managing Editor going back to high school
After 16 years, the Managing Editor of the Adirondack Daily Enterprise is stepping down to pursue a master’s degree in education. He plans to become a high school English teacher, the paper reports. His last day is today.
