Travel to Canada may reopen
The Northern Border may, finally, open up, as soon as June 22, says the Adirondack Daily Enterprise. Assemblyman D. Billy Jones, D-Chateaugay Lake, said, “our pleas for a phased approach to reopening are finally being heard.” The Canadian government is attempting to inoculate 75% of the population with at least one dose of the vaccine, and 20% with two, before beginning to open, the story says.
Prison jobs drop: retirements and the slow pace of COVID-era training
Prison jobs are on the decline in the North Country, and the reasons are two-fold, the Post-Star is reporting (with help from North Country Public Radio). First, northern New York prisons, as with prisons across the state, just have fewer inmates and two prisons closed. Also, retirements and job changes have added to the loss of 550 jobs. People who joined prison work in the 1980s and 90s are now ready to retire, or, with the closings of prisons, did not want to move and continue the career, says the prison guard union. The administration says that COVID stopped the hiring and new-training process.
Saratoga Lake trailer park residents out of luck
Trailer park residents on Saratoga Lake who formed a homeowners association to fight to stay where they are, have lost that fight, the Times-Union is reporting, but they won a battle. Instead of moving in two years, they will leave in five. The eviction comes as the property is being sold and developed. A nonprofit, Rebuilding Together Saratoga County, tried to help the homeowners find the money to buy the property themselves, but a deal between the landowner and another for-profit buyer, at a much higher price, ultimately sank the trailer park residents, the story says.
Brookside Museum set to reopen
The Saratogian says that the Brookside Museum in Ballston Spa will reopen June 26. The venue was closed throughout the coronavirus pandemic, and will reopen with events surrounding Stewart’s Shops, the country store, and “The Social Life of Hats,” the story says.
