Moreau Community Center getting new kitchen
A $50,000 grant from Lowe’s Home Improvement's charity arm will help the Moreau Community Center update its kitchen. The layout will be improved to separate the kitchen from the offices and other current uses of the space. The new kitchen will allow the center to prepare dozens of daily meals, as they have, for the most needy, and to offer space for cooking and food prep classes, a story in the Post-Star says.
Bail and crime data
Bail reform might be to blame for gun violence, as a about 1/6th of the suspects in criminal cases in New York end up rearrested before their first trial is through, a story in the Times-Union reports. The data has been collected under the new bail reform law that makes it easier for people to post bail and be allowed out of jail. In the story, people focus on the data itself and the nuance that it does not collect. For instance, it does not say how many gun-related crimes were committed after a person was released for a different crime.
Ironman will run (bike and swim) in Lake Placid this year and next
There was some question last week about the value of the Ironman challenge that runs annually in Lake Placid (Sunday July 25, was the most recent), but that has been put off for at least a year, a story in the Adirondack Daily Enterprise said over the weekend. The Regional Office of Sustainable Tourism, the village of Lake Placid and the Town of North Elba announced on Friday that the triathlon would be brought back to Lake Placid in 2022, the story says. The debate continues and the decision was made without a formal public vote. The new “destination management plan,” for the region will look at major events to see how they fit with the overall economy.
No fair. Fair!
The Post-Star has a slideshow of Saratoga County Fair. See it here. After a year of COVID and no fair, people were just happy to get out and play, says a story in the Saratogian.
