Harmful Algal bloom in Lake George
The first harmful algal bloom of the season hit Lake George east of Million Dollar Beach on Tuesday, July 20, the Adirondack Explorer is reporting. Lake George Association staff identified the bloom. July’s rains added fuel to the fire as they bring run-off into the water that the cyanobacteria like to eat, the story says. Some cyanobacteria can be harmful to people. This is the fifth bloom in the history of the lake, largely regarded as among the cleanest in the nation.
Four Seasons Natural Foods buys its own building
Four Seasons, the natural food market on Henry Street in downtown Saratoga Springs, has bought its own address after seven years of renting, the Albany Business Journal is reporting. Frank Parillo sold the 8,640-square-foot building. The sale closed July 15, the story says.
Developer pays for "skimming"
The owner of Ellsworth Commons in Malta has agreed to pay $805,000 to the federal government. The payment ends lawsuits over allegations that the company made improper mortgage payments and submitted false statements, a story in the ABJ says. Eugene Rosen, of Ellsworth Partners LLC, broke the skimming statute and took money into his company that should have been paid to the federal government program that helps build affordable housing, the story says.
Businesses vandalized
Windows were smashed and property was damaged but inventory at a handful of local businesses was not taken, a story in the Post-Star says. Police are investigating and they have a suspect. The damage took place late Sunday and early Monday, the police told the Post-Star. At least six businesses in Glens Falls and South Glens Falls were attacked.
