The Saratoga County Board of Supervisors has a new leader, the Post-Star reports this morning. Moreau Supervisor Todd Kusnierz took the reins after a vote at their organizational meeting yesterday. Kusnierz says the focus will be on taming the coronavirus pandemic in the county. His approach will include better communication with the public.
Environment, Energy and Sustainability
A road salt lawsuit nets one western New York farm $91,000 and a stiff rebuke to the New York State Department of Transportation, the Adirondack Explorer is reporting. In the decision to side with the farmers who sued the state, Judge Renee Forgensi Minarik said the department acted too slowly and salt runoff from Interstate 90 was an “unlawful invasion” of the farmland, the story says.
Also in the Explorer: the Adirondack Land Trust bought 17 acres on Thirteenth Lake in the Adirondacks and plans to give it to the New York State Forest Preserve. The purchase will give the preserve full ownership of the shoreline.
The Adirondacks needs help finding and controlling invasive species, says the Adirondack Daily Enterprise this morning. The Adirondack Park Invasive Plant Program will host five events from January through April aimed at helping locals learn to spot unwanted plants and animals such as the hemlock woolly adelgid and emerald ash borer, both of which have been found in the Adirondack Park in the past year.
Health Care and Fitness
Gateway House of Peace won a $5,000 grant from The Arnold Cogswell Health Fund, the Saratogian is reporting this morning. The grant aims to comfort people in end-of-life health care. The Gateway House works with Hospice care and other groups to provide health care support. Their website says they have also won a $2,500 Lend-A-Hand grant from Adirondack Trust Company.
