Some companies that have been working with StartUp New York, a state-funded business incubator system, have gotten letters that said they did not follow the program's guidelines if they followed Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s executive orders to work from home last year. The snafu means that companies might lose tax incentives and their employees could owe thousands of dollars in unpaid taxes, the Albany Business Journal is reporting. Empire State Development, which oversees the program, called the situation "a particular complexity” in an email to the businesses, but did not speak to reporters on the matter.
Glens Falls closed a Police Reform Task Force Zoom meeting abruptly last night when verbal-bombers--people who disrupt online meetings--started using racial pejoratives and other vulgar language, the Post-Star is reporting this morning. The story says the forum was intended for the public to respond to the recommendations of the task force, but people in the online meeting unmuted their microphones and started cursing and using racially insensitive language.
Paul Smith is running for the 1st Ward city council seat in Glens Falls, the Post-Star is reporting this morning. A Queensbury native, he is the second candidate to announce a run for the seat and has ideas for how to better utilize East Field and how to help people with mental illness and substance abuse. He has suffered from both. 1st Ward councilman Jim Campinell is term-limited from running again this year. Smith is running as an Independent, and his competitor, Edward Donohue, is looking to win the seat as a Democrat.
Parents of a child molested at Brant Lake Camp are suing the camp for failing to protect the child enough, the Post-Star is reporting. The molestor, Eric Stolz, was arrested in 2018 and is already in jail. The lawsuit now contends the camp knew of Stolz’s behavior and did little to fix the problem. The camp is taking the approach that they did not know, and that Stolz and his actions--not camp management--were to blame.
