Healthcare and Fitness
New Yorkers have to travel from the Albany area to far-flung regions of the state to get vaccines, according to an AP story in the Saratogian. A state health department spokesperson said 250,000 appointments filled in 24-hours. State lawmakers are calling on Gov. Andrew Cuomo to launch a statewide pre-registration system given that the state’s “Am I Eligible” online portal if overwhelmed.
It’s not PCBs that cause cancer in Warren County, it’s smoking and other lifestyle factors, New York State health officials say in a Post-Star story this morning. A counter report said that the state did not consider that Warren County is average in smoking, obesity and other lifestyle issues that cause cancer, yet the county has much higher levels of cancer than other counties. According to today’s story, it’s a sampling error in the study that compared Warren to other counties improperly.
Manufacturing, Agriculture and Forestry
Hacker Boat company in Ticonderoga is moving to Corinth Road in Queensbury, the Albany Business Journal and the Post-Star are reporting. Makers of luxury wooden boats, built on 100-year-old designs, the company will bring all of the production, sales and administration staff under one roof, and will make deliveries of parts and completed boats easier from the location just off the Northway at exit 18, the stories say. The move should occur this spring. Morgan Marine, the company showroom and launch site just north of Sabbath Day Point on Lake George, will remain open.
Travel, Tourism and Recreation
If Franklin County forecloses on the Big Tupper Ski Area this spring, the Town of Tupper Lake wants a say, the Adirondack Daily Enterprise is reporting. $121,000 in back taxes are owed on the property, and the current owners still have time to pay. Even if they do not, the town is just touching its toes to the water, as it were, to say they might be interested in buying or taking over the ski area, or buying the property and letting others run the business.
