Size matters. That’s why Price Chopper/Market 32 merged with Tops Friendly Markets, though the merger is more of a take-over. It’s Price Chopper’s management team that will run the newly formed company, and it was Tops that has been in bankruptcy. The merger gives Price Chopper more buying power to negotiate better prices on food, and more income to put toward store upkeep and technology advances, an analysis in the Albany Business Journal says. Here is their first story on it. We ran a quick-and-dirty piece here.
Education and Training
Saratoga Independent School’s head will retire at the end of the year. She has led the school since 2017, a story in the Albany Business Journal says. Under Lisa Brown’s watch, the school raised $1.7 million and built a new academic wing. The school sits on a 60-acre campus on Lake Avenue, east of the Northway.

A new report out of the CUNY system says that an increase in home health aide salaries would help the economy and fill gaps in the healthcare system, a story in the Times-Union reports. According to the story, the increase would add $5.3 billion to New York’s coffers through new income and sales tax. Also, it would reduce Medicaid costs, the story says. This is partly due to the growing need for home health services as the coronavirus pandemic forces people, especially older people, to stay home.
Travel, Tourism and Recreation
The Great Escape’s Lodge and Indoor Waterpark is a stand-in for the park itself as officials wait to hear if the state will allow amusement parks to reopen this year, a story in the Post-Star says. The waterpark may only use its lazy river feature right now, but they have turned other parts of the lodge COVID-safe, and families can roast marshmallows, go on scavenger hunts and make gingerbread houses, among other activities, the story says.
