Residential Real Estate
One area landlord has come under the notice of the state, the Times-Union is reporting. Despite the coronavirus pandemic, and the ban on evictions and rate hikes beyond 5%, renters of luxury apartments on Weibel Avenue in Saratoga say in the story that Patrick Poirier and, Burns Management, pushed for more. The story also says that Poirier might not have the license to run the business.
Financial Services, Insurance and Banking
Executives at Arrow Financial, the parent company of Glens Falls and Saratoga national banks, have gotten raises, the Albany Business Journal says. CEO Thomas Murphy’s base salary is now $600,000 per year. Much growth in the company’s bottom line in 2020 came from the Paycheck Protection Program, the story says.
Health Care and Fitness
A self-imposed, internal shake-up is occurring at the New York State-run health lab, the Wadsworth Center, the Albany Business Journal is reporting (they take much of the story from a New York Times account). The director of the lab, Jill Taylor, was one of nine to retire or resign. The Times article says Gov. Andrew Cuomo scorned their expertise, and, the story says, New York is 20th among the states in vaccinations.
Government, Law and Legal Services
It’s a show of the power that women have gained in the New York State legislature. The Sexual Harassment Working Group, made up of former legislative aids, put forth a set of six legislative priorities for the current session in Albany, joined by state Senators and Delegates. This comes after success in the 2019 session. Among the laws: changes to whistleblower protections for the staff members of elected, appointed and judicial officials, a story in the Times-Union says. The legislation removes what they call the "license to harass."
