Government, Law and Legal Services
Glens Falls will know if you own a vacant commercial or residential property. Under a law approved last Tuesday by the Common Council, owners are required to list vacant property with the city, even if the property is actively for sale or up for rent and the owner is looking for a tenant, the Post-Star is reporting this morning. Owners pay fees with the registration, but those can be avoided if the owner is actively pursuing a sale or lease at a reasonable price.
New York’s taxes are expected to rise, says a story in the Adirondack Daily Enterprise this morning. The website quotes Gov. Andrew Cuomo during a coronavirus briefing saying: “If there’s no federal aid and we have to do the budget, you’re going to have to do tremendous tax increases.” The story says the budget shortfall could reach $63 billion over four years without federal intervention.
An attorney for parking lot owners in Albany pushed back against the city’s development corporation that wants to buy the properties in the Liberty Square area through eminent domain and sell them for redevelopment, a story in the Albany Business Journal says. City attorneys at the Industrial Development Agency meeting where the discussion occurred said they are following the law and not working to take land for another developer.
Travel, Tourism and Recreation
The sand will stay put for now, at Harry J. Betar Recreation Park in Moreau. Rather than let developer Richard Schermerhorn dig for sand at a location beneficial to the town, the town will post a request for proposals and let other businesses bid on the project, the Post-Star is reporting. The bowl created when the sand is removed could be used as a natural amphitheater and for winter sledding, the story says. The town was open to Schermerhorn, who approached the town, doing the work, but the board decided it best to open the project to others, the story says.
Health Care and Fitness
The Saratoga Center for Rehab and Skilled Nursing Care in Ballston Spa is closing under the guidance of the state health department, the Saratogian is reporting. The facility currently has 35% occupancy and will operate until all the residents have been moved to suitable locations. It has been labeled a Special Focus Facility by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, the story says.
