Cops called on candidate
Minita Sanghvi, canvasing door-to-door in her run for commissioner of finance in Saratoga Springs had the police called on her, the Daily Gazette reported. Sanghvi, an Indian immigrant who teaches business at Skidmore College, told the paper she has knocked on 700 doors and wants to think the best of her neighbors, but she knows the police were called because of the color of her skin. She walks with a white woman to counterbalance that, the story says.
Dalton pushes back on “Patriot”
U.S. Rep. Elise Stefanik and the Saratoga GOP are promoting an upcoming appearance of Scott Presler at a Republican voter registration rally in Saratoga County. Presler is a conservative operative and has been identified as a former top strategist for an anti-Muslim group, the story says. Stefanik has been tweeting promotions of the appearance calling him a “Patriot,” but will not appear with him due to her pregnancy, the story says. Saratoga Springs Commissioner of Public Safety, Robin Dalton, a former Republican who is running for mayor as an independent on the Saratoga Stronger line, shot back: “Scott Presler’s alt-right facism is not welcome here, not today, not tomorrow, not in our city, not in our America.”
Video game start-ups in the Capital Region
The Albany Business Journal highlights three Troy gaming company start-ups, two from grads of RPI. Dang!, Rumblecade, and ToothPike Games are based in Troy, with games already out or coming soon. The business models focus both on game creation and on selling components of gaming to other producers.
Iron works on the block
The 1.09-acre property at 275 Bay Road in Queensbury, site of the former Mullen Iron Works, will go on the auction block, starting at $68,700, the Post-Star is reporting. The Warren County Board voted to hire Auctions International to sell the property and would collect a 6% fee on the sale. If no sale, the county owes the company $2,000. Concerns about contaminants in the dirt and groundwater had some supervisors wondering if the matter should be tabled, but the winning argument pointed to a state Department of Conservation report that found little cause for concern.
Henri blows past
The risk of major flooding in the Capital Region and north is over, but officials are watching Schoharie Creek, the Times Union is reporting. Middleburgh had 3.2 inches during the storm on Sunday, and officials report minor flooding near the Gilboa Bridge in Gilboa, the story says. The Schoharie Valley and the Catskill Mountains took a lot of rain, but the lower wind speeds did not topple trees and cause power outages.
Cuomo gives up dog
Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who leaves office tomorrow and has been staying with a sister in Westchester County, has asked staff members if anyone would like to keep his dog, Captain. The pooch was left at the Executive Mansion when the governor moved out last week. The dog is has nipped a few people in the past three years, a story in the Times Union says.
