The salmon, reared in a netted pen in the waters of the Saranac River, will then be released into the wild, where they will swim downstream to Lake Champlain. The nets help the salmon imprint on the river. The process has worked in other rivers to help stocked fish survive to swim back upstream and reproduce, the story says.
