Springs: Insurance at issue with police board
Saratoga Springs City Attorney Vincent DeLeonardis, Director of Risk and Safety Marilyn Rivers and police Chief Shane Crooks met to discuss the proposed police oversight board in Saratoga Springs, and they did so without Commissioner of Public Safety Robin Dalton, a story in the Times Union says. In emails the Times Union received, the officials said the proposed legislation will affect the city’s insurance coverage and is ripe for dispute and litigation.
Newell Way dedicated
Glens Falls honored attorney Ronald Newell by naming a trail after him. It connects Horicon Ave to the park. He spent 40 years as the city’s attorney and loved Crandall Park, a story in the Post-Star says. Mayor Dan Hall said he had the best interest in Glens Falls in mind and was a trusted confidant. He died in January and was 77 years old at the time.
High school athletes may benefit financially
The New York Public High School Athletic Association updated its rules Wednesday and is allowing high school athletes to benefit financially. The NIL—or Name, Image and Likeness— rule means local athletes can earn money by through endorsements of products and other means, a story in the Daily Gazette says. They may not include their schools’ logos.
School have money, lack workers
Capital Region school districts have state and federal aid to spend on faculty and staff, but people do not want the jobs. Experts say the pandemic is merely exacerbating a problem that schools were already facing, a story in the Times Union says. Fewer college students are getting teaching degrees and the teachers in the schools are tired of fights over training and evaluation, the story says. Low-wage staff have been more affected by vaccine mandates than have faculty.
Ti seeks state grants for water project
The Ticonderoga Town Board is applying for state grants to help with a water project, and the board is asking residents to join a letter writing campaign, the Adirondack Sun is reporting. The communities of Chilson and Eagle Lake are not part of the Ticonderoga water authority and draw water from a pond that will be closed to that use in 2025. The grant would make affordable a project to get water to them.
