Central Warehouse’s owner claims procedural issue in foreclosure
The owner of the former Central Warehouse in Albany County filed a court motion that says the county violated notification requirements as it has tried to foreclose on the property and sell it to a developer, the Albany Business Journal says. The owner owes more than $500,000 in taxes on the 11-storey rundown warehouse.
Core Tech eyes expansion
Ballston’s Core Tech Industrial Corp. is looking to expand for a third time in six years, and the company that builds electrical switches and fire suppression equipment is not just looking in New York, but in South Carolina and California, a story in the Albany Business Journal says. They are looking to build 18,000 square feet and plan to spend about $3 million, adding about 10 jobs to their staff once completed. They are working with the Saratoga Economic Development Corporation, talking to officials in South Carolina, and with people in San Diego, about tax and other incentives for the expansion, the story says.
Ukrainian, former local intern, talks about the war
Ukrainian Iryna Voloshyna, who was a Folklife Center intern at Crandall Library in Glens Falls, said her family back in Ukraine are on the front lines of the internal refugee crisis that Russia’s attack on the country has created. In her home city, her father is an electrician at the hospital where he keeps the lights on as people stream to the town, away from the fighting. Her sister is helping at a local shelter, and Iryna, who is studying in Indiana, has been translating and helping with news interviews, a story in the Post-Star says.
Ballston Spa special election next week
The sparks are flying in the run-up to Ballston Spa’s special election next week, the Daily Gazette says. Democratic Mayor Christine Fitzpatrick accuses here Republican opponent Frank Rossi Jr., of wanting to be an “influencer” not a mayor, while Rossi contends that Fitzpatrick and the village board are inept and cannot handle the challenges of infrastructure. The race decides who will fill the unexpired terms for both mayor and a seat on the board. Democrat Kamran Parwana and Republican Bernadette VanDeinse-Perez are running for the board of trustees seat, the story says.
Mirror Lake’s salt drop
Brendan Wiltse studies Mirror Lake’s water quality as a scientist with the Adirondack Watershed Institute, and he reports that salt has dropped for the second year in a row, for 2020 and 2021. Road salt was threatening the health of the lake and the trout that live in it, the Adirondack Daily Enterprise is reporting. Better salt application, warmer winters that require less salt, and general weather conditions are listed as possible reasons for the drop. Mirror Lake is in the center of Lake Placid. That village and the Town of North Elba have been working the problem, the story says.
