Fort William Henry Historical Museum 48 Canada Street, Village of Lake George, New York 12845
Pop quiz: who built Fort William Henry and when? Who were the indigenous peoples who hunted and camped at the south end of Lake George before the fortress was built?
Learn the answers to these questions and more during a tour of the historic site, now open on weekends. Wintertime tours include musket-firing demonstrations and historical presentations by interpreters dressed in period clothing. Guests can expect to leave with a feeling of what life was like for the soldiers living behind the earthen walls more than two centuries ago.
Haunted history tours are also available at 5 and 6 p.m. on Saturdays for visitors looking to find out if the people killed at the fort all those years ago are still around – as ghosts. Tickets here.
Fort William Henry Museum is open from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The spaces are unheated and visitors are advised to wear appropriate shoes and clothing and use bathroom facilities before arriving. Ticket-holders are welcome to use the bathroom at the Fort William Henry Hotel next door and visit the Tankard Taverne at the hotel for free hot chocolate.
