Like Bernie, Whole Harvest waits patiently to open

A worker applies branding to the windows of Whole Harvest a healthy cafe on Broadway in Saratoga Springs. The store replaces the Plum Dandy frozen yogurt shop which closed earlier this year.
New signs went up on the storefront at 419 Broadway in Saratoga Springs earlier this week. Whole Harvest is taking over the space that was once occupied by Plum Dandy, a yogurt shop that is “permanently closed” according to their Facebook page.
Whole Harvest is a vegan, organic market with locally sourced ingredients. They sell full meal take out and have had a presence at 5 Caroline St. as harvest2homes.
The harvest2homes Facebook page has a meme of Bernie Sanders, clad in his now-famous brown jacket and mittens, sitting in front of the shop, “Waiting patiently for the grand reopening at 419 Broadway…”
Glens Falls Planning Board OKs many plans in long meeting Jan. 20
Architectural and facade changes to the Glens Falls National Bank and Trust Company building at 250 Glen St. in Glens Falls passed the review of the Glens Falls Planning Board quickly and unanimously, Wednesday evening, Jan. 20.
Using words like “beautiful” and “great project” the board thanked the presenters for their work.
The most praise, however, was aimed at the back wall of the building. Currently, the wall is largely brick with a few small windows. That wall will be covered with nine large widows, three-to-a-floor. The windows significantly change the view from Elm Street, the board noted.
Changes to the front of the building include a new entry that is ADA compliant, has steel-and-glass canopies and heated pavers that melt snow in the front of the building.
New signs on the front and back, along with limestone accents, are being added or changed as well.
JMZ Architects and Planners are handling the project.
The old Price Chopper building at 76 Cooper St. won approval to split into two retail spaces. A number of possibilities had been considered for the site over the past year including boat storage and a model train museum. Despite being their former store, the Price Chopper corporation no longer owns the building.
And a restaurant at 196 Glen St. will get some new paint and a canopy out front to cover outdoor seating, after a generally positive review from the Glens Falls Planning Board. Other architectural features out front will largely remain the same, Randall Kelly, a designer with the firm AJA Architecture, told the board.
Changes at the back of the building will enclose an outdoor stairway to the basement, and a proposed walk-in cooler will be concealed in walls and a roof, though not technically inside the building. The board granted approval to the plan with some conditions on paint color, storm water mitigation and other features. The building is historic to Glens Falls. Said Ethan Hall of the board, “I’m glad to see people taking these old bldgs and fixing them up.”
